I thought I would do something new and review a trilogy I just finished!
For those who know me, would know I am a huge book worm and I guess I would like to give some of my insight on the I've read :)
In this post, I'll be reviewing the Divergent series by Veronica Roth
Genre: Science fiction/ Dystopia
Summary: This is the official summary for the first book, Divergent, from Veronica Roth's blog
In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.
During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves… or it might destroy her.
My opinion:
After reading The Hunger Games, I was really interested in the dystopian genre (
meaning) and decided to order the first two books online. I started reading the first book and I could.not.put.it.down.
I'm pretty sure I finished the first book in two days or something.
I really love the main character Tris. I think she is the perfect female protagonist, in that she has a really good balance of a strong female character and a vulnerable and innocent character, which I really love about her.
I also love the world that they exist in. The whole faction concept was really fascinating to me.
I thoroughly enjoyed the plot in the book and I found it extremely interesting to read.
It had a good amount of action and also politics, which I really love.
The whole concept of factions and how Tris struggles on which faction she remains true to, which also shows Tris's struggle with her identity, is what I really loved about this first book.
The book also has elements of romance, which help to lighten up the book, as there is a lot of action in the book and can be quite intense with all the action plus the whole politics of their world.
I really adore Four who is Tris's love interest. Four would probably be my favourite character in the book.
He is everything that I like in a male and he is just perfect (my fangirl is coming out LOL)
The book ended up in a somewhat happy ending. There were some things still left unfinished which was of course explained in the second book but it ended quite well.
There are some character deaths in the book which really hurt me. It's surprising how attached you can become to characters in the space of a book.
The second book was not as interesting for me, maybe because I had enjoyed Divergent so much, that it didn't live up to what I exactly expected. In saying that, Insurgent was a very good book too!
Insurgent introduced more of the faction world. The first book mainly revolves around two of the factions but Insurgent looks at the other factions and helps us really get to know the faction world.
Insurgent also tests the relationships of the characters. Mainly Tris and her relationships with the other characters which I also enjoyed.
What I didn't like in particular in Insurgent was how frustrating some of the characters were in the other factions. I have a feeling they were created that way to evoke frustration, as I think that was the way Tris feels about these characters too.
The end of Insurgent left on sort of a cliff hanger, which made me extremely extremely excited for Allegiant.
And finally on to the third book, Allegiant, which I finished today LOL
I was extremely excited for this book and I'm not sure how I felt about the ending.
Overall I enjoyed this book more than I did Insurgent but not as much as I enjoyed Divergent because of the ending of the book.
The first two books were narrated by Tris but this book had both Tris and Four narrating.
What I liked most about this final book is that it put the faction world ,which we find out in the book is actually Chicago, into perspective which the rest of the world that we know so little about because the first two books revolve solely on the faction world.
Allegiant also focuses less on factions but on another way to I guess "categorise" humans. I hated this new category and of course the author intended for this hate because that's the basis of this story.
This new categorisation not only sets up Tris's goal in this story but also tests the relationship she has with Four, which sets up another problem to be resolved in this book.
The one thing that I wish Roth focused on was Tris's friendships and also more into Tris and her brother Caleb. Tris and Caleb go through so much and I think so much is left being unsaid between them.
Overall I adore this series! Everything about it, I really loved. I have just finished Allegiant and as I said before, my feelings for it are mixed. I'm upset about what Roth had to do to end it but I understand why she did.
I had so much more I wanted to say but as you can see this post is already really long and I didn't want to give too much away of the plot.
But I really love this trilogy and if you were into Hunger Games, I definitely recommend this series!
Rating:
Divergent-10/10
Insurgent-7/10
Allegiant-8/10
Overall-25/30
